About Us

"Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches; when I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn't to be doing things that required pants." --Scout Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

A Bold Undertaking

One definition of a scout is someone who can find paths through uncharted territory — and, with the help of an intrepid troupe of supporters and guides, that’s what we did. The fireside tale of Scout’s Honor includes the spark of an idea, setting up camp in the collective space of 1564 MRKT, a woodsy photo shoot, and the adrenaline-filled excitement of Kickstarter territory.

Part 1: Spark

The "we" of Scout's Honor is sometimes really just a "me." I'm Clare. I grew up in Chicago and moved west, to San Francisco, in 2005. I'm shy but adventurous, and I've always been fascinated by clothing and style--specifically, how people use their clothes to tell you more about who they are. In 2012, I decided to follow my lifelong dream of studying fashion by taking classes at City College of San Francisco. I also started reading a lot of fashion blogs, looking for styles that I both related to and was inspired by, and immediately felt a spark of recognition when I discovered blogs like Qwear and tomboy/femme.

Here were folks who, like me, were figuring out how to express their authentic selves through clothing. What I saw on these sites was mostly a combination of thrifted and mainstream-branded clothing, combined or styled in unexpected ways. Everyone looked great, but still, readers were always writing in to ask where to find clothes like this, clothes that fit and that were truly made for them, brands they could turn to season after season. I wanted that, too. So I decided to make it happen.
